The Virus Comes Knocking

In my book I mention the approximate number of people killed each year world-wide by various other animals, such as dogs, snakes, elephants and several others. While viruses are not in this category, up until this Corona virus, mosquito carried infection (both bacterial and viral) kills about one million people per year. Yes, people kill other people and sadly that amounts to about 600,000 deaths. In both these cases likely victims have little to no way to avoid such deaths.

Only in this pandemic have we found a way to slow down its transmission and death toll with the sole purpose of buying time to find a treatment and cure, as well as a vaccine. Just by distancing we take more control of our chances to avoid an unpleasant death. And while many people believe in an afterlife in heaven, I have yet to find anyone celebrate the dying of a loved one because they are leaving life on Earth for heaven.
